Interesting Times

I was standing in line at Sunflower Market.  The checkout clerk was a young man with short, wild black hair, long sideburns and bone spiral earrings, black.  He was talking about the Wall Street occupation with a customer.   When I got to the front of the line he said, “sorry, talking politics.”

“That’s okay!”  I told him.  “These are interesting times; it’s good to talk to each other.”   That got him all fired up and we were off.

I follow astrology a little because, as my brother Mr. Practical says, “why not?  No one else seems to know what’s going on.”  It reminds me that in astrological terms, there are incredible things happening in the sky right now.  Conflict and tension and stress, layers piled upon layers so it can no longer be denied:  something’s going on.

Pluto and Uranus are beginning to square each other, in a combative transit that will affect all of humanity.   A square between planets is a 90-degree angle; my understanding is that it’s like a car crash in which each driver is blind-sided by the other.

Pluto supports business as usual with our familiar top-down power structure, but Uranus says, let’s break out and be free. Both planets exert tremendous force, both will have their way.  Uranus is the planet of sudden events and surprises, so events are unpredictable.

Astrologers agree, the overarching theme is revolution.

Both planets take many years to move through one sign of the zodiac.  So as they lumbered into their initial approach last spring, the energy of the square began to build, spurring protests in Wisconsin, London, Wall Street and nearly two dozen countries in the Middle East.  Those are just the ones that come to mind.

Uranus and Pluto formed a loose square twice this year but they but are scheduled to make an exact square seven times between 2012 and 2015.  In astrology, close and exact seem like the difference between throwing punches in the air and actually making contact.  Either way the energy of the fight is there, but that roundhouse to the face hurts a lot more when it lands.

The last time these two planets faced off was a conjunction in the 1960’s.  That was a very tense time but it was also creative, colorful, freewheeling and empowering for a lot of people.

The last time these two planets squared each other was 1929 through 1937, a time marked by the Great Depression  and Hitler’s rise to power.

Here we are again.  Throw in the Mayans, Nostradamus, End of Days and other tense transits going on at the same time and it’s a party!
